In 1771, King Ferdinand IV’s consort, Queen Maria Carolina of Habsburg, during a court ball in the Palace of Caserta had his guests served, a drink from the black color widespread in Vienna and little in Naples where, precisely because of the black color, it was believed to bring bad luck: the “devil’s drink“. With the event held in the Palace of Caserta, the following was born. the first coffee shop in the Kingdom of Naples. From that time on, it was the Neapolitans who excelled in the preparation of coffee thanks to the use of a special roasting of the beans that gave the drink a rich and intense flavor.
